Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At first, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level domain names remained functional.
